The Comparison Trap

comparison-is-the-thief-of-joyIn this age where social media is a huge part of our daily life, we can’t help but fall into a trap; “The Comparison Trap”. We are bombarded by postings from family and friends; from the meals they cook for their family to the holiday they are enjoying overseas while some of us are just trying to get through the day staying sane and some struggling to pay their bills.

I’m not saying that people should not post and share about their lives, I’m writing to those who see those posts and starts comparing and feel bad about their own lives.

You see, when we compare our lives with others and wish for what we don’t have rather than being contented for what we have, we are in danger of having covetousness in our hearts. We want what other people have and this will rob us of our Joy. Sometimes I fall into this trap especially towards the end of the schooling year as parents will post photos of their children receiving awards in school and my girls will have no opportunity to shine in that way (I’m not saying my girls are not bright students, we are taking a different path from the norm), so I have to remind myself that while academics excellence is good, having good character is better. A person with admirable character will go further in life and that is enough motivation to keep me on course of the plans we have for our girls.

So I discovered a profound quote by Theodore Roosevelt today, that “comparison is the thief of joy” and would like to encourage you to NOT compare yourself with others, always remember that YOU ARE FEARFULLY AND WONDERFULLY MADE and Contentment does not mean that you desire nothing; but rather it’s the simple decision to be happy with what you have.

Don’t fall into the comparison trap.

Have a blessed weekend and God bless.
